Idea Camp at Marseille 2o14: connected action for public spaces | Idėjų stovykla: viešųjų erdvių reanimavimas
Autorius: Laimikis.lt
What happens if you bring together 50 creative urban practitioners, who develop and implement solutions for public spaces and a team of actors from the cultural sector, experienced in crowdsourcing, activism, inclusive cultural education, and community-driven initiatives? “A small revolution” could be the answer:) On October 23-25 the very first Idea Camp took place at Marseille, welcoming urban designers, researchers, artists, community workers and activists from Western and Eastern Europe, as well as the Eastern Mediterranean, to the Villa Méditerranée for a series of intensive workshops, focused on the development of theirs projects, which aim to activate public spaces and citizens participation.
The 50 ideas were selected from 813 applications, and collected in Idea Booklet [pdf], which is instrumental in grasping main tendencies in urban activism: social design, urban farming and community kitchens, city games, critical publishing and all kind of non-formal education activities as well as re-organisation of classical models of tourism (for example, library-supported alternative city-tours) are the hottest trends 2014.
Trolleys for ideas: participants developed and visualised their pilot ideas for public spaces, on the base of which pitching sessions and an exhibition was arranged
To facilitate the further development of the pilot ideas, Enric Senabre & Anders Lindgren (members of the Idea Camp team) developed a mobile desk for discussing and structuring the proposals. This trolley seems to be a brother to the Street Blog, which Laimikis.lt team designed as a tool for facilitating public discussions in public spaces. What we missed a lot was exactly the wheels to make our Street Blog more mobile:
Street Blog, an interactive mobile tool designed by Laimikis.lt team for facilitating discussion in public spaces, 2oo9-2o14
The Idea Camp consisted of several complementary blocks
(and the same design of the program is really something to learn from!):
1) Idea Talks by urban activists. I met in person Santiago Cirugeda (recetasurbanas.net, Seville), whom I regard as one of the first tactical urbanists and include the works of his collective to my lectures on tactical urbanism!
2) Creative workshops with the representatives of French art and media scene. A great chance to learn tape-art basics from Aurelien Nadaud (Création collective)! Laimikis.lt has been keeping eye on the works of this collective since their first experiments with the tape-art, as we were curious about this technique. “Feel the line and cut”, – says Aurelien. As a result of participating in this workshop, we used tape as a tool to arrange the exhibition on critical urban practices (Lithuania-Belarus), which took place in Minsk!
Tape-art workshop by Aurelien Nadaud: developing a visual narrative. Villa Méditerranée, where the very first Idea Camp took place. Built in 2013, it is a part of the revitalisation of the seashore, turning it into public space.
3) Knowledge Stations: consultations and intensive discussions with the partners of the “Idea Camp: Connected actions for public space”, Culture 2 Commons, Les Tetes de l’Art, Oberliht, Platoniq, Krytyka Polityczna, Subtopia. Platoniq (Goteo) shared their valuable experience in crowdfunding for urban initiatives, while Culture 2 Commons discussed the management and governmentality issues for cultural organisation.
4) Alternative City tours in small groups. During “Bikes and boats” tour we met the devoted fans of boats and the sea, who left Paris for Marseille and a local activists group, who is promoting bicycle as a city transport, invinting people to join tuk-tuk ride. A great opportunity to perceive the city from the different, sea and tuk-tuk routes perspective!
5) Spa-zone: an amazing set of smart wooden games suitable for public spaces and amazing panoramas around the Villa Méditerranée.
• P.S. Party-time at Dock des Suds with mesmerizing EZZA and groovy High Tone ft. Oddateee.
What’s next: networking and implementing the pilote ideas. Laimikis’ proposal for the Idea Camp was to initiate a series of the Street Komoda’s workshops in various neighbourhoods and to develop a social design tool kit for developin local social networks and interneational networks of social designers. If I’m right, Idea Camp is going to be arranged next year, so keep eye on their page!

LT:
2014 Spalio 23-25 d.
Trolleys on wheels is a great solution for turning workshops into an exhibition space!
One of the wooden games in the dining hall at the Vila Mediterranee and the panorama by the Vila. Unfortunately, the battery of my photo camera died just afetr I have arrived to Marseille.
